We are a group of young dancers from Austria, Finland, Slovakia, and Poland and Norway and Hungary, all based in Vienna. Already in previous years we were training together and collaborated in various constellations on different occasions. Eventually, through the realization of the project "You don't fit the profile" in October 2020 we hatched the idea to work together on a regular basis as an official Dance Company. Driven by the urge for change, after the pandemic made it even harder for professional dancers to pursue their work and the fact that we felt a stagnation of Contemporary Dance in Vienna and Austria in general, we decided to advance the idea and founded the Blare Dance Company in September 2021.
We stand for movement and dance as a mediator and the body as a medium to transmit and communicate certain topics and issues. We strongly believe that solely with bodies in motion, dance can convey profound content, sometimes even more than any other means of communication, since after all it is the body through which we experience the world around us and which is formed, encoded, and shaped by our surroundings. Having a body is what unifies us all and so a dancing body can transfer a certain experience or feeling to other bodies and initiate thought processes through its movements and physical states. We stand for Contemporary Dance that deals with and visualizes important discourses, without excluding a strong physicality and the use of dance techniques. However, it is also of great relevance for us that the body and movement, emerging from different physical researches can stand for themselves, because the body in motion, with all its facets and functionalities, already transports a lot of content. Hence, we believe that artistic processes and dance works can emerge from the interrelation of theoretical and physical research.
Our interests cover a broad range of subject matters, as well as scientific, sociopolitical and liberal arts orientated discourses, which we want to combine with our diverse dancing skills to explore a variety of physicalities, movement languages, and qualities that are generated through this very correlation. Through each work and each investigation, we can create a dance, which is unique and bears the engagement in something particular and the thereby arising process in its appearance.
As a dance company, we aim to invite and work with different choreographers, thus maintaining the artistic variety of our Company through applying diverse ways of working rather than always falling back on our own habits or one certain way of moving and creating. At the same time, we can connect with international Artists and the Dance Scene across borders and contribute to the enhancement of intercultural exchange. Additionally, we are highly interested in working interdisciplinarily by collaborating with artists of various fields to support the crosslinking and mutual enrichment amongst the arts. Furthermore, we advocate Contemporary Dance, which is not dependent on the rigorous structures of institutionalized theatre, and want to counteract the elitism that not only Dance but Arts in general unfortunately currently very often entail. We believe Arts and Culture should be easily available for everyone, no matter which background they come from. We see it as a necessity, that Contemporary Dance reaches people from all different realities of life and that everybody can share in our joy to express ourselves through and connect through our bodies in motion. This way we want to enforce a sense of community and contribute to cultural diversity.
